The honours were shared when visiting Demerara took on home team Berbice in the male and female volleyball tournament which was played on Saturday last at the Port Mourant Training School Hostel.
In the end the scripts came out almost as predicted with the teams evenly matched in the female category who’s encounter was a 5 set humdinger with Demerara eking out a 3-2 win in the end by the slimmest of margins.
The male encounter was a one sided affair with Berbice dominating for a 3-0 win.
The female category had all that one could ask for in the see-saw game which went down to the wire. Berbice won the first set 25-19, only to see Demerara bouncing back to take the next two at 25-19, 25-15 to take the lead at 2-1. Berbice regained their composure to even things up with a dominant 25-13 win. With the scores now level at 2-2. There was all to play for and despite the home court advantage Demerara held their nerve to win 17-15.
The male encounter saw the first set being the only close game with Berbice winning at 25-23. After that things just got worse for Demerara. Berbice took the other two sets at 25-17 and 25-11 for the 3-0 win.
The second leg of the tournament will be a different affair as it will be held indoor. It is set for Saturday 25th at the National Gymnasium in Georgetown, commencing at 10:00 hrs.
At the end of the encounters male and female national teams are expected to be selected for some overseas engagements. (Samuel Whyte)
