A route march was held on Saturday in Mahaicony to observe the 42nd anniversary of the establishment of the Community Policing Groups (GPGs) in Guyana.
Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramattan, in his address to the gathering at the Mahaicony Sports Club commended the CPGs for their dedication to their communities; he, however, noted that more can be done.
“I want to thank you for all the great work that you have done, but we have more that we need to do. Today it is necessary, in these evolving times, that you be prepared for a shift in focus and we need a shift in focus to include more public awareness,” Minister Ramjattan said.
He also issued a call to the older members of the CPGs and the various communities to pay keen attention to the young people within their areas.
This, Minister Ramjattan opined, will help to deter them from being involved in criminal activities.
“We have to know what the leading members of the community can do to ensure that we nip criminal activities in the bud; especially among young people. It can only happen when we bring back the elders to watch and look after the young people.
“Spot their talent, shift them into positive areas, so by the end of their times, they would’ve taught so many positive attributes to young people, that we will not have them indulging in negative things. So, it is not only an enforcement role, but it is a role to mould our young people in the communities.”
Community Policing in Guyana commenced in 1976, with the objective being, to harness the energies of willing members of communities across Guyana in support of the work of the Police, to achieve a crime-free society, and to be responsive, together with the Police, to the needs of the communities in respect of the necessity to maintain law and order.
The theme of this year’s observance is Promoting Safe and United Communities by Building Social Cohesion through, Improved Quality of Communication; Community Understanding and Citizen’s Needs.
