The National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue was livened on Thursday night with the initial four round-of-16 knockouts matches in the Corona Futsal tournament.
Alpha Warriors, Future Stars and Bent Street all scored a total of six goals in their victories, while California Square edged Back Circle 4-3 in the night’s feature game that was played in front a packed and highly entertained crowd that witnessed entertaining matches all night.
David George, Mishack Barratt, Ned Arazer and Wesley Garraway each scored once to give California Square the win.
In the night’s opener, the buzzing and star studded Alpha Warriors qualified for the quarterfinals after blasting six goals past Mocha that only managed three of their own in the nine-goal thriller. Warriors’ Nigerian forward Benjamin Opara netted a hat-trick, while Guyana Defence Force’s Delroy Fraser bagged a brace to go along with Delwin Fraser’s solitary strike in the win.
The consistent Future Stars continued their promise of doing well in this tournament with a 6-4 victory against Sophia. National players William Europe and Curtez Kellman slotted in braces, while Shane Morris and Aaron Anthony scored one each in the win for the young squad. Shemroy Arthur’s brace along Shiek Kamal and Desmond Cotton singular goals weren’t enough for a Sophia win.
Bent Street defeated Old Skool ballers in their round-of-16 knockout to end the night as the team with the biggest margin of victory (four goals). Fruta Conquerors’ Pernell Schultz seems to be in form on the smaller player’s surface and netted a superb hat-trick during the win. He was assisted well by his teammates Daniel Wilson, Andrew Murray and Kelsey Benjamin who all scored once.
The final four round-of-16 matches continues tonight at the same venue from 20:30 hrs featuring Xtreme Campbellville against Tiger Bay in the first match, followed by Alexander Village versus West Front Road, then Leopold Street will match skills with Showstoppers. The feature match will be a mouth watering clash between Sparta Boss and Albouystown at 23:15hrs.
