Many Guyanese women have made, and continue to make, significant contributions to their society day after day. Many have since concluded that these fine role models in society should not be respected and honoured on just one day, but throughout the year.
Just last Tuesday, seven Essequibian women were honoured for their outstanding role in molding the society of Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam.] These women were honoured by the CLIMBERS, a humanitarian body who recognised the need to highlight the contributions, of these outstanding characters.
The awardees were women who excelled in their respective careers, which included nursing, teaching, journalism and even women who are self-employed.
The “Women of Distinction Award” was first awarded to Ms. Syndilin Isaacs. Isaacs, who is a long-standing member of the Guyana Police Force, received the women of distinction award, for her significant contributions in the disciplinary service.
An outstanding figure in the teaching profession is Ms. Sybil Monroe- a woman who served in the education sector for 39 years. In the year 1995, Ms. Monroe was assigned a grade six class, consisting of 30 pupils.
The result at the end of the Grade Six assessment that year was remarkable, as 28 of her 30 pupils attained passes to Presidents College, and the other two gained the Anna Regina Multilateral.
The Regional Vice Chairman of Region Two, Juliet Coonjah, was also awarded for her advocating spirit, in fighting for gender equality for women.
There are popular businessmen on the Essequibo Coast, whose names are well known, when it comes to business woman, however, there is always that one name that stands out, Vilma DaSilva.
DaSilva who is also a board member of the New Guyana marking corporation, was awarded for her success in the business arena.
Many are so distracted by the busy schedule of their day-to-day lives, that they seldom notice what goes on around them. It is then the responsibility of the media to keep the world informed and abreast with the daily transitioning of our society.
Awarded for her outstanding role in journalism was Indrawattie Nateram, a young professional who has already been serving within the media fraternity for over nine years.
Ms. Doreen Jacobus, who served as a nurse, midwife and Toshao was also awarded the Women of Distinction Award.
The final award was presented to Ms. Yvonne Pearson, who also served as a Toshao for some 18 years. Ms. Pearson presently serves as a Member of Parliament, and continues to represent the indigenous people of Guyana. [Romario Blair]
