There were Mackenzie High and Ne Silvercity ran away winners of the first two matches when the 10th Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Under-18 football tournament for Linden Secondary Schools kicked off on Wednesday afternoon at the Wisburg Secondary School ground.
It began with Mackenzie High beating Linden Technical Institute (LTI) 2-0 while the second match saw New Silvercity Secondary hammering Linden Foundation, 7-0. Just before kickoff the visiting members of the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation, Ashton Angel (Snr.) and Compton London lectured the teams gathered.
London remembered the exploits of Richmond who was dashed to the City of Georgetown to play football for Guyana and back to his work place in Mackenzie as it was called then before there was the Linden Soesdyke Highway.
London said Richmond was an all-round athlete who scored a record 175 not out as a batsman playing cricket representing Mackenzie Sports Club and also excelled to be a top class billiards and table tennis player, while he also was a great swimmer.
Angel said that the ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation based in the USA was very pleased to be part of the 10th edition of this tournament aimed at grooming the next level of national players and that the foundation would continue to ensure it is played throughout the years in Linden. He then declared the 2018 championship opened.
However, it was noticeable that there were no officials representing the Education Ministry or the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) who had given its blessings for the staging of the championship.
Scoring both goals in Mackenzie High’s win over LTI was Kemuel Batson. New Silvercity got their goals against Linden Foundation from Emmanuel Atkins who blasted a helmet-trick with the others coming from Ojani Whittington, Huey Fraser and an own goal from Linden Foundation’s, Keon Liverpool.
Matches will continue today 14.45hrs between Christianburg Wismar and Harmony Secondary with the feature clash bringing together Linden Foundation and Combined Schools. Venue is the Wisburg Secondary School ground.
