Vijay Singh, 21, was yesterday sent to jail for six years by Justice Sandil Kissoon when he appeared before him and a mixed jury in the Berbice High Court. Singh was found guilty of having sexual activity with a child under the age of 16 years.
The accused, who hails from the Upper Corentyne area, was in a relative’s workshop on the 8th October 2015, and during that time he took the opportunity to insert his finger into the private parts of the underage girl. While committing the act he was seen by a relative and the matter was reported. Singh was arrested and charged.
Before sentencing Singh, the Judge said he had 20 years in mind. He took ten years off for the man’s early plea. He took another four years off for Singh’s plea of mitigation which was put forward by state-appointed attorney Sasha Roberts of the Legal Aid Service.
Singh will serve a total of six years in jail.
