In what can described as ground breaking and a historical first for Table Tennis in Guyana, 397 Km away from the Coast of Georgetown and as part of the implementation of the GTTA’s National Table Tennis for Schools programme, supported by the Government of Guyana and the Olympic Association, the Upper Mazaruni Table Tennis Steering committee under the auspices and in collaboration with the Regional Department of Education, with support from the Guyana Table Tennis Association, held the inaugural Upper Mazruni Junior table tennis Championships at Kamarang.
Actively coordinating coaching and contributing to making this venture a reality was recently accredited ITTF coach Sir Rafael Hunter from Jawala. Rafael did the GTTA National Sports Commission GTTA 18 hour programme for schools and communities under the programme, with national coach Mr. Linden Johnson and participated in the ITTF level one course hosted by the GTTA and conducted December 2017 by ITTF Latin North American Development Officer Mr. Ramon Ortega Montes.
Coach Rafael Hunter, actively made the rounds in the region over the last 4 months coaching the kids. A very passionate and hardworking teacher and Coach, Hunter was ably supported by the GTTA and the region and motivated to make a difference in his region.
Great feature is the number of girls being exposed to the sport.
The tournament pitted the best boys and girls 11 and 13 years and under from 7 villages of Jawla, Peruni, Aurora, Quenenbang, Imbamadai, Sipuruni who all travelled to Kamarang to represent their village and engage in competition to determine the champion.
The tournament was a first step in establishing a system of competition to bring the students into competition to assess their progress made over the last four (4) months of coaching with Coach Hunter.
He indicated that he was very enthused by the progress and the next assignment is the indigenous games.
