Gone are the days when the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Company (New GPC) was given preferential treatment. The company is no longer handed contracts on a platter. However, it is still not discriminated against.
New GPC will now have to compete fairly for contracts just like any other company.
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, spoke of this reality yesterday as he hosted a post-Cabinet press briefing.
Harmon announced the award of contracts for the supply of pharmaceuticals to government by a few companies including the award of a $469M contract to Meditron Inc.
The Minister was then questioned about the disappearance of a company that once dominated the list of contracts awarded for the supply of pharmaceuticals—New GPC.
Harmon said that the company still gets awards.
He told reporters, “The process is now open and transparent and the new GPC continues to get contracts. Once you bid and you are determined to be the best possible company you win the bid. That is how it is. You recognise that I report on the noting of contracts by procurement entities since Cabinet no longer has an objection.
