The five masked men who invaded the Republic Park, East Bank Demerara home of Guyana Shore Base Finance Director Robert Albiez, were not met with any resistance when they showed up and robbed him and his family on Wednesday morning.
A senior police source who spoke with this publication said that the executive got out of his bed, walked down an inner stairway, and opened the door and the bandits entered his house.
“He was awakened by his intruder alarm and having been awakened he proceeded to open his door. His home is hooked up with a security company and by virtue of that, the alarm was triggered and went off, but he opened the front door and upon opening the door, five masked men invaded the premises,” the police source said.
The police official said Albiez gave no explanation for not taking extra precautions before opening his door.
A resident who lives close to the victims said he heard the alarm at Albiez’s home go off on Wednesday…”and as soon as the alarm stopped, I heard screams and things falling.”
The resident said he contacted a security company, and ranks arrived in about three minutes.
“I then heard noises at the back (of Albiez’s house). They (the gunmen) came in through the back and fled through the back.”
The gunmen escaped with US$200, a diamond and gold wedding band; nine gold finger rings; a silver Fossil wristwatch valued US$200; a pair of diamond and gold earrings valued US$2000; a silver bracelet valued US$1000, a Russian Passport and a laptop.
Police said the bandits gained entry to the two-storey property by prising open an eastern door and cutting off the padlock.
According to reports, Mr. Albiez retired to bed with his 30-year-old wife and their 10 month-old daughter at around 22:00hrs on Tuesday, after securing the premises and activating an alarm.
About 02:30hrs on Wednesday, he was awakened by the sound of his security alarm. When he got up to switch it off, a male intruder confronted him.
Police said Albiez scuffled with the intruder, but was the struck on the back of his head. Four other men, including two with handguns, confronted him.
They then held his wife and baby daughter at gunpoint while demanding that he hand over his money and threatening to kill his baby daughter.
The intruders removed money, jewellery and other documents from a bedroom before escaping through the eastern glass door.
Police arrived at the scene some ten minutes later.
‘C’ Division Commander Leslie James said that the gunmen are still to be apprehended.
“We were able to check the area and up to now we have not been able to get any CCTV footage from the area, the officer said.
