After more than a decade of agitation for decent compensation for the injuries they sustained in the line of duty while stationed at Camp Groomes, nine ex-soldiers are likely to soon be well compensated. At least this is based on information this publication was recently privy to.
Although this publication was unable to confirm this latest development with senior Guyana Defence Force [GDF] officials or the expected beneficiaries, reports suggest that the ex-soldiers were invited to a meeting at Camp Ayanganna on Tuesday with the Chief of Staff and other senior GDF ranks to discuss a proposed compensation package.
Based on information filtered to this publication, part of the compensation package will include that each of the soldiers will see themselves being elevated to the status of Sergeant and be eligible for retroactive payment, possibly from the time of the incident.
This publication was further informed that the proposal had in fact found favour with the ex-soldiers, who have all denied to admit to such a development when contacted by Kaieteur News. Reports suggest that the ex-soldiers by the end of the meeting had agreed to sign contracts in order to qualify for the compensation package.
The move in this direction comes on the heels of support rendered to the ex-soldiers by the Guyana Veterans Legion.
