Police in Linden yesterday afternoon visited the Amelia’s Ward/Wisroc car park and impounded several vehicles at the Mackenzie Police Station for visual inspection.
Commander of ‘E’ Division Anthony Vanderhyden said that the exercise was intelligence-driven and comes in the wake of the recent bust of a carjacking ring that is based mainly on the Linden Soesdyke Highway.
The exercise entailed the checking of chassis numbers and engines. A few drivers claimed that they were bullied off the Park.
The exercise continues today.
Police dismantled the massive carjacking ring last month, seizing several vehicles and motorcycles, and an excavator. A number of suspects have been charged.
Investigators believe that the gang’s operations stretched from East Coast Demerara to Linden. The members reportedly included ex-policemen, several young taxi drivers, individuals with access to firearms, mechanics and bodywork specialists, women who acquired duplicate vehicle keys, and individuals who assisted in providing forged documents.
Police say that one of the key players in the operation rented out the stolen cars to young taxi drivers. In turn, they paid him $24,000 a week.
Most of the vehicles were stolen in Georgetown and stashed in areas such as Kuru Kururu, Yarrowkabra and Monument Hill on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Some were then dismantled, their registration numbers removed, some repainted; and refitted with parts from other vehicles, and equipped with false number plates.
Police also found several vehicle doors and the shells of numerous other vehicles.
Investigators believe that the gang had assistance from individuals who helped them to procure documents such as bogus certificates of registration.
