GAPLF to observe IWD on Saturday with exhibition at Tropical Pollo

ateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF), in observance of International Women’s Day (IWD) would be hosting a lifting exhibition on Saturday between 11:00hrs and 13:00hrs at the Tropical Pollo, Camp and Robb streets in the city.
International Women’s Day, which is being observed under the theme, ‘#PressforProgress’ -, is a worldwide event that celebrates the achievements of women everywhere. This year’s celebration comes on the heels of an unprecedented movement for women’s rights as 2018 marks 100 years since women gained the vote after the suffragette movement.
According to the GAPLF which salutes all women across the sporting divide on this special day, the observance of IWD is very important to the federation.
”At present we have a small group of female powerlifters (10-15 individuals); but notably they are a very dynamic group of individuals. A distinctly diverse person/professional background makes GAPLF ladies very special. We have mothers, grandmothers, students – law, engineering, business administration, working professionals – lawyers, administrators, coaches, educators, planners and entrepreneurs, among others.”
Guyana has a number of stand-out female athletes who have all etched their names in the history books locally as well as internationally where they have all excelled.
Among them are
Andrea Smith
Dawn Barker, Kimberley Mars-Lonke, Britney Mack, Andrea Smith, Tiniesha Toney and Nadina Taharally. Mack has competed at the Commonwealth level, while Taharally became the GAPLF’s first Master competitor (over 50 years).
Lisa Oudit
There are also a number of up and coming females the likes of Lisa Oudit and Runita White.
”Female participation at our meets is steadily increasing; e.g. we had 6 female competitors at February’s Novices championship. When not competing, these women also volunteer their time and energies to the federation as executive members or committed volunteers, ensuring the smooth delivery of our sport,” the Federation informed.
The recently elected Executive Committee has three females serving as Vice-President, General Secretary and Public Relations Officer.International Women’s Day celebrates all the achievements of women worldwide – from the political to the social. It also strongly calls for gender equality – which was the original aim and has still not been fully actualised.
Figures show that there is a gender pay gap across the globe, and women are not present in equal numbers in business or politics. The campaign theme for the important day this year is #PressforProgress.
