With the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) tournament on the horizon, the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) will be affording some of the country’s top players a chance to impress selectors and also stake claim to the country’s ‘Holy Grail’ of club basketball – the National Club Championship.
According to head of the GABF, Nigel Hinds, the tournament which dubbed ‘Road to Mecca V’, will bounce off on April 7 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the finals will be played on April 28.
The date for Road to Mecca V is early as opposed to the usual year-end championship and it will allow for the best current players to lay claim at a spot on the national squad that will contest the CBC tournament which is scheduled to bounce off in neighnouring Suriname from June 15 to July 31.
At last year’s National Club Championship, Colts retained their title after narrowly edging Linden’s Victory Valley Royals in an 85 – 83 points game thriller.
The win also saw Colts pocketing $600,000, while Royals received $400,000 and Kobras finished third to pocket $200,000.
Head of the GABF, Hinds, noted that preparations for the CBC tournament will commence immediately after the Road to Mecca V in May this year and will conclude in June.
