An 87-year-old woman was killed at around 06.00 hrs yesterday after she was struck by a minibus while heading to church.
Dead is 87-year-old Lydia Rodrigues of Lot 51 North Melanie, East Coast Demerara.
She was on her way to attend a service at the Universal Church when the tragedy occurred on the Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Police said that the vehicle, BKK 6714, is owned and was driven by Narsingh Jagsar,
According to a police statement, the minibus was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of the road while Rodrigues was standing on the northern side of the road.
As the minibus approach, Rodrigues tried to cross the road and was struck by the vehicle. Rodrigues sustained head injuries and
was pronounce dead on arrival at the GPHC.
A breathalyzer test conducted on Jagsar showed no trace of alcohol in his system. He is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
