The Paradise Sports Club Ground on the West Coast Berbice was once a hive of activity. The Sports Club was one of the top sporting facilities in Berbice especially in the areas of cricket, football, circle tennis and other outdoor sports. However, the venue was left to run down by the previous administration with hardly any activity taking place there.
That phenomenon will now end as the Ministry of Social Cohesion in collaboration with the Mahaica-Berbice (Region Five) Regional Democratic Council recently commissioned the recreational ground which was recently rehabilitated.
The ground was commissioned by Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Youth, Culture, and Sport, Dr. George Norton.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony Minister Norton, recalled that the ground’s rehabilitation was a commitment made to residents years ago and added that… “More will be done in time to come.” He added that plans are on stream to donate some gear – balls, cricket gear and football uniforms soon to the NDC. He urged the residents to take care of the ground and parents, to encourage their children to play a sport, and develop their skill set in a sporting area.
Director of Sport, Christopher Jones in his speech stated that measures will also be put into place soon for the ground to have lights. He also explained that teams are currently disseminated around the country, conducting field assessments to best determine which grounds should be enhanced this year.
Regional Community Enhancement Officer, Dolston Huston said the ground, will expand the sporting fraternity of the Mahaica-Berbice region beyond their dreams.
The ground was fenced to the tune of $7M with works commencing November 22. Its completion was slightly delayed due to adverse weather conditions. “Not only does the community have a fenced recreational facility, but 85 percent of labour force during the rehabilitation was from the community, even the blocks were bought in the very community”, Huston explained.
“The project is a dream come through for many,” Chairman of the Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) Emile Wilson highlighted and expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the residents.
