A woman met her demise, Tuesday, after she was struck by a speeding car on the Affiance Public road, on the Essequibo Coast.
The woman who was struck by the vehicle was identified as 54-year-old Nandranie Singh, better known as Annette, of Queenstown, Essequibo Coast.
Police enquiries disclosed that the vehicle was proceeding south along the public road at a fast rate, when it collided with the pedestrian some time around18:00hrs on Tuesday last. Witnesses, who heard a loud crash, recalled seeing the woman in mid-air, before she landed on the edge of the road.
As a result of the impact, Nandranie sustained head injuries and was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where she eventually succumbed early Wednesday morning.
Kaieteur News was informed that at the time of incident, the woman and her daughter had just completed their shopping at Bacchus Supermarket–a busy shopping area on the Essequibo Coast.
Her daughter recalled rushing out of the supermarket after an alarm was raised about an accident. To her disbelief, it was her mother lying unconscious at the edge of the road.
A passenger of the vehicle later informed family members, that the driver of the motorcar appeared distracted as he was peering into his phone, allegedly using his car stereo at the same time.
Devastated family members even told this publication, that they are grossly disappointed in the manner in which ranks of the ‘G’ Division’s Traffic Department handled the situation. The woman’s daughter said that present on the scene of the accident last Tuesday was just one traffic rank. She noted that the officer directed the driver to the Anna Regina Police Station, before even marking the scene for further investigations.
The woman’s husband, Sahadeo Singh, told this publication, “If the police cannot give us the satisfaction we need, then we would take our own actions within a legal framework. We are not satisfied with the police because from the beginning the police moved the car without marking off the road. Now he can go back and say the incident didn’t happen there and maybe he can even frame the entire scene to his liking.”
The driver of the car, on the other hand, is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
