The Berbice Football Association (BFA) leg of the GFF/Pele Alumini Frank Watson U-15 Intra Association League kicked off on Sunday last at the Esplanade Park, New Amsterdam with five matches following the traditional march past of teams.
Taking the salute at the march past, were President of the BFA and GFF Executive Committee Member Keith O’Jeer, BFA Secretary Joseph Simon, GFF Technical Director Ian Greenwood and New Amsterdam Town Councilor, Kirk Fraser.
Both O’Jeer and Greenwood in their remarks encouraged the youths to work hard and maintain focus in order to be rewarded with the appropriate skills to firstly be drafted into the Academy Training Centers (ATC) which puts them a step closer to the National Team.
Fraser, himself a former National athlete, representing the Mayor and Municipality of New Amsterdam challenged the youths to play fair while his Council in collaboration with Central Government will ensure that the relevant infrastructure is in place for the overall development in academics and sports.
Opening their account on winning notes were Orealla Falcons, Corriverton Links, Cougars and New Amsterdam United, while Young Strikers and Hearts of Oak battled to an exciting 1-1 draw.
New Amsterdam United had lost their encounter to Monedderlust by a 1-2 margin in the third clash of the day but it was subsequently discovered by the officials that Monedderlust fielded an over age player, Daniel LaRose.
The BFA took the decision to award the match to NA United due to the infringement by Monedderlust.
Monedderlust’s goals were scored by Bryon Bailey in the 22nd minute and Michael Jordon in the 27th. Bryon Bailey then scored an own goal in NA
United’s favour.
The first team to register a win was Orealla Falcons which hammered East Bank Gunners, 9-0. Shano Edwards led the goal blitz with strikes in the 8th, 12th and 34th minutes; emulating his hat-trick form was Brett Sarius (39, 44, 45) while a double came off the boot of Daniel Alexander (22, 30) with the other from Carlton Hamilton in the 57th minute.
Corriverton Links then trounced Arsenal FC 3-0 on account of the third hat-trick of the day which was scored by Matthias Lewis in the 35th, 46th and 59th minutes.
Cougars then took the field and turned back the challenge of Hopetown United Rangers 4-0; a brace each from Tyrese Tim (3, 56) and Kevon Hamilton (27, 49) led the winners.
And, Hearts of Oak and Young Strikers battled to an exciting 1-1 draw. Hearts of Oak had taken the lead midway the first half but Young Strikers’ Nicholas Browne who showed encouraging skills with constant raids on the Hearts of Oak defence finally got his reward and the equaliser in the 67th minute.
