The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League season three continued on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground with an exciting double header that was played in front of a packed pavilion.
Western Tigers won the first game 2-0 against Buxton United, while league leaders Victoria Kings suffered a similar 2-0 defeat at the hand of Fruta Conquerors.
Among those in the stands at the Mecca of football in Georgetown was visiting FIFA Regional Director, Marlon Glean who had a first-hand viewing of Guyana’s top tier league.
Ruimveldt based Western Tigers scored during both halves of the 90-minute game with Hubert Pedro netting in the 6th minute and national midfielder Daniel Wilson hitting the target in the six minutes from stoppage time to hand the East Coast based Buxton United their third loss in four matches.
With the win, Western Tigers are now top of the league with 10 points from four games.
Meanwhile, Victoria Kings who led the league up to the previous round, lost to Tucville based Fruta Conquerors that recently inked the longest partnership between a football club and sponsor, Guyana Beverage Inc., in a disappointing game which was decided in the second half.
East Coast based Kings didn’t only lose their first match of the league after a three-game win streak, but also their lead on the points table. It was a disappointing match for Fruta because although they conquered King’s tactically, they failed to put away most of their chances with striker Pernell Schultz being the main culprit, while midfielder Ryan Hackett had his fair share of opportunities as well; hitting the upright once during the first half but redeeming himself in the second.
Conquerors played fluidly, attacking down their right side mainly, exposing Kings’ left back who looked out of sorts, but lacked the finishing the touch. It wasn’t until the 64th minute, seven minutes after his arrival, that new acquisition, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson found the back of the net to give Conquerors the lead. Ryan Hackett then scored one minute later in the 65th to secure a comfortable 2-0 lead Kings.
Although Kings have in their ranks the leading goal scorer Aubrey Gibson that occupied the left flank, he was stifled by his underperforming left back and coupled with limited balls from the rest of the team. When Gibson did get on the ball, he exuded brilliance that led to dangerous plays but all were snuffed out by Conquerors solid defence that included prodigy Jeremy Garret as one of the centre halves.
The league continues on Thursday with another double header at the Guyana Defence Force ground. Admission is $500, children under 12 years and women are absolutely free. (Calvin Chapman)
