A 43-year-old father and his son along with former policeman, Jason Harry, were yesterday charged and released on bail after being accused of fraudulently using false chassis numbers on registered motor vehicles.
Nigel Chung and his son Ricky Chung, 23, both of 5 Coverden, East Bank Demerara, along with Harry, 26, of 458 Monument Hill, Kuru Kururu, all denied the allegation brought against them at their appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Particulars of the first charge allege that between August 12, 2017 and February 10, last, at Georgetown, they fraudulently used a chassis number on a registered motor vehicle knowing same to be false.
It was further alleged that between December 9, 2017 and February 10, last, at Georgetown they used chassis number NZT 2400011309, on a registered motor vehicle knowing same to be false.
The men were each granted $200,000 bail and instructed to return to court on April 12, next.
According to facts presented in court, Nigel and his son operate a welding and bodywork shop at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara. Two vehicles – PPP 82 and PMM 7517 – were taken to them for them remove the chassis numbers and replace them with new ones.
One of the vehicles, a Toyota Spacio, belongs to Samuel Munroe, 59, a chauffeur of Lot 2369 Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara. The Toyota Allion is owned by Trechel Powers, of Lot 198 Eve’s View, Annandale, East Coast Demerara. Both vehicles were identified by their respective owners.
On Monday, Nigel and his son appeared in court on charges which alleged that between August 17, 2017 and February 13, 2018, at Georgetown, fraudulently used a forged chassis number on a registered Toyota Spacio motor vehicle, knowing same to be false.
And that between December 9, 2017 and February 10, 2018, at Georgetown, the duo fraudulently used a forged chassis number on a registered Toyota Allion motor vehicle, knowing same to be false.
Both defendants had denied the allegations after they were read to them by the Magistrate.
However, the charges were withdrawn against them yesterday based on advice from the Officer in Charge of Crime in Police ‘A’ Division. As a result, new charges were instituted.
At that court hearing, Attorney-at-law, Dexter Todd who represented the father and son told the court that his clients have been fully cooperating with the police. The lawyer disclosed that the two vehicles that were found in his clients’ possession were taken to them, for them to remove the old chassis numbers and replace them with new ones.
