Sohan, who was suffering from end stage kidney failure, said that ahead of his surgery he was often subjected to incessant vomiting, high blood pressure, headaches and severe weakness. His kidney failure symptoms, he recalled, commenced when he turned 17 last year.
“I had vomiting and it just wasn’t stopping and I was brought to the emergency [unit at GPHC] and they ran some blood tests, and after that the doctor said that I had Nephrotic Syndrome,” Sohan recalled.
He said that he started to find out more about his condition and was informed that he might be in need of a transplant in order to return to normalcy. Because of the advanced stage of his kidney failure, Sohan was required to commence dialysis two days after his diagnosis.
But a few days after surgery and Sohan is already beginning to feel considerably better. He revealed yesterday that even some rashes that had appeared on his skin have started to disappear.
“I am not feeling upset anymore; I don’t have the headaches…I am feeling good,” Sohan confessed, as he expressed appreciation to his mother for donating her kidney to him.
According to Amrita, her decision to give a kidney to her son is to ensure that he gets a second chance at a good life. She is convinced that he has a great deal to live for. She disclosed that when he became ill, he was busy pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Guyana and working part-time.
“I am giving my child a second chance; if I didn’t do this and he died I know I would regret it, so I know I made the right decision,” said Amrita of the eldest of her three children. She was high in praises for Dr. Persaud and his team for their expertise.
