A miner yesterday made an appearance before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he faced a charge of rape, allegedly committed on a six-year-old female relative.
Thirty-year-old Vul Smith was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on July 28, 2012, at North West District, he engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of sixteen. The matter was held in camera.
The accused was released on $200,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until March 5 when he will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for reassignment.
According to information, on the day in question the child was left in the care of the accused and she requested to use the washroom. While the child was in the washroom, the accused allegedly went in behind her and indulged in sexual activity with her.
The child then told her mother what had transpired and the mother reported the matter to the police. An investigation was carried out and the accused was arrested and charged.
