The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) established to look into the 2008 deaths of eight miners at Lindo Creek, Upper Berbice region will attempt to host another public hearing.
The first public hearing was called off when witnesses did not show up to testify at the Department of Public Service on Waterloo Street on February 19. While not providing reasons, the Commission publicly stated that all public hearings were cancelled until further notice.
A notice from the CoI Secretariat yesterday indicated that a public hearing is planned for March 1st at 10 a.m.
President David Granger appointed Retired Judge, Donald Trotman as the sole Commissioner to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Cecil Arokium, Dax Arokium, Horace Drakes, Bonny Harry, Lancelot Lee, Compton Speirs, Nigel Torres and Clifton Berry Wong, on or about June 21, 2008.
Kaieteur News was told that some witnesses, who have been in the shadows since the June 2008 incident, had expressed reservation about testifying publicly under the spotlight of the media.
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon declared last week that there is no shortage of witnesses for the CoI.
The Commission plans to accept original and follow-up statements from interested parties during the life of the Commission and will be setting subsequent hearings to facilitate the attendance of witnesses.
All persons wishing to testify and give information are asked to submit statements of their intended testimony, letters and memoranda to the Commission, prior to their appearing before the Commission.
Where necessary, persons will be assisted by the Commission’s Secretariat and are invited to contact the Secretariat at the email address and/on telephone number [email protected] or 227-2292.
