The opening night of Petra’s third annual Corona Futsal tournament kicked off on Saturday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue with six entertaining matches. This tournament which will carry a total prize purse of over $2million began with a nine-goal thriller, in the first group round-robin encounter between Mocha and Plaisance which the former won 5-4.
Steffon Ramsey bagged a brace to lead Mocha to victory, making Akeem Thomas’ similar brace for Plaisance a vain effort.
In the feature match of the night, Tiger Bay displayed their potential to be one of the frontrunners for the $600,000 grand cash prize after defeating one of the tourney’s perennial favourites Sparta Boss 3-2. Alpha Fletchman netted a double, while Deon Alfred provided the finishing touch to erase Jeremy Garret and Sheldon Shepherd early goals.
Meanwhile, Future Stars predictably made light work of Campbellville Extreme with an easy 6-0 thumping that was spearheaded by a brace from Kareem Knights.
Moses Griffin, Andre Webber and Melvin Ross each scored once as Albouystown defeated Y.M.C.A 3-1 in the third match at the Gymnasium on Saturday before Leopold Street and Alexander Village played to an entertaining 3-3 draw in the fourth match.
Jermaine Beckles and Selwin Williams both scored twice for Back Circle as the team got past Broad Street 6-3 in the penultimate game of the night.
More heated group matches are expected when the tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue due to the incentive for teams in the group stage; the top finishers will get an additional $40,000, second place $30,000, third place $20,000 and fourth place $10,000.
Meanwhile, the runners-up $300,000 and third place $150,000, and the MVP of the tournament and a lucky patron will receive one motorbike each from part sponsors Rose Ramdehol through their hero brand.
See below tomorrow’s fixtures for the tournament which is also being sponsored by NAMILCO.
