The man who is always in the habit of ill-treating his parents and beating them for money to buy rum and drugs, has been jailed on a charge of wounding.
The man, Michael Henriques, 38, of No19 village, East Coast Berbice appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. He is charged with unlawfully and maliciously inflicting bodily harm on his 67 year old father Compton Henriques, on Friday January12, 2018 at No19 village East Coast Berbice..
According to the prosecution’s case as presented by Corporal Winston Poliah, the accused and his father lived in the same house. Also living there was his mother.
About 15:00 hrs, on the day in question the elderly man was in the outside toilet (in the yard) when the accused pulled opened the door and entered with a piece of wood in his hand.
The man who is said to be a drug addict proceeded to inflict several lashes on his father’s body. The man sustained several injuries. His right hand was broken in two places and his face, knees, and other parts of his body bore signs of the beating.
The man’s wife, who is the mother of the accused tried to stop him from beating his father and was assaulted herself. She persisted and managed to get the abuser off of his badly injured father.
Neighbours responded to her cry for help and assisted in rescuing the elderly man who had collapsed. The man was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital and treated for his wounds.
At the time of committing the act, the younger Henriques was reportedly under the influence of narcotics.
The court was told that the man is a drug addict and always abuses his parents.
He was sentenced to 18 months in jail.
