The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) held their presentation and awards ceremony recently at the Guysuco Training Centre / Port Mourant Hostel, Port Mourant Corentyne Berbice. It was revealed that the BVA had an extremely good year. Giving the review of the association’s performance during the foregoing period was President Levi Nedd.
Nedd who was recently re-elected to the position as President gave a comprehensive review of the BVA activities for the year 2017.
The year began with an awards and presentation ceremony for 2016.
Some eight major competitions were held by the BVA with participation from senior and junior males, senior and junior females and schools teams.
During the year some emphasis was placed on development and sustenance of the game. The BVA collaborated with Department of Education, Region six and successfully held clinics for Secondary and Primary schools. Pupils and teachers participated and in the end were allowed to take the court and showcase what was learnt.
Schools were also enrolled on the BVA list and given basic volleyball equipment.
An Inter Secondary schools male and female volleyball tournament was successfully held. This was also used as a nursery to select players to prepare for Inter Guiana Games (IGG) 2018.
A number of overseas ventures were undertaken during the year.
A BVA team was successful on a tour to Trinidad where they played in Chaguanas and the University of the West Indies. The teams that participated in the IGG competition were made up primarily of players from the BVA. The male contingent which dominated consisted of eight players and two coaches from the BVA.
An U20 male and female team represented Guyana in an Inter Guiana tournament in French Guiana. The males dominated to win whilst the females after more than 20 years advance to the finals where they lost in a close encounter.
Players from Guyana were awarded, best defence, setter, attacker, and blocker in both categories. The male contingent consisted of players from the BVA.
A senior Guyana male volleyball team participated in a tournament in Suriname with seven of the players including the captain being from the BVA.
The BVA hosted a number of beach volleyball tournaments during the year. Two pairs from the BVA participated in an Inter Guiana’s beach volleyball tournament involving Suriname and French Guiana in Suriname. Their performance was creditable.
A BVA referee’s refresher seminar was held during the year.
The BVA continues to work with the Ministry of Public Health in a number of areas including Suicide Prevention, Mental Health and Say no to HIV and Aids.
Despite its excellent performances during the year there were also a number of hindrances:
Migration of players in search of jobs, players working schedules, sponsorship for tournaments, the need for upgraded playing facilities, training time for players, lack of finance, lack of competition.
Appreciation was extended to Christopher Jones and The National Sports Commission (NSC), Alex Foster and the Saint Francis Community Developers (SFCD), former President Gregory Rambarran, DTV 8, Balram Shane and Poonai’s Pharmacy of Rose Hall Town, Spready’s Snackette of Port Mourant, Guysuco and the Guysuco Training Center.
All Executives and clubs of the BVA, the GVF, present and past apprentices of the GTC/PM and the PMTC alumni were also commended.
Clubs and players were challenged to continue to live up and put their shoulders to the wheel and continue to support the cause of the BVA in 2018.
The BVA motto being “live up, don’t give up, with suicide”, players were urged to continue to dress good, look good and play good. (Samuel Whyte)
