The Region Four Environmental Health Department, yesterday, seized thousands of dollars in items from A Wen Supermarket, located at Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, in the Buxton Foulis District.
Sodas, dairy products, and Ovaltine were just some of the items seized for being expired. The items were taken from the shelves where they were displayed for sale during an inspection that was done by the District’s EHAs and EHO.
According to the Buxton/Foulis district Environmental Health Officer, an exercise regarding proper food safety practices has been ongoing since October 2017 and items, when found unsafe for human consumption, are being taken off the shelves and destroyed.
“There is an ongoing exercise to educate supermarket and shop owners as regards stock rotation: first in, first out,” the officer said. “Owners are advised to keep checking their products’ expiry dates and to pack shelves accordingly,” she added.
She said that products with shorter expiry dates should be placed in front and sold first to avoid having many expired products.
The Environmental Health Department, she said, goes around and inspects all shops, supermarkets and other entities that require sanitary certificates for licenses purposes. During inspections, if damage, spoilt and/or expired goods are found, they are seized and destroyed.
“A condemnation order is made then the items will be destroyed and disposed of by the Buxton/Foulis N.D.C,” the officer said.
She explained that only last week the department seized a number of items from other supermarkets and shops in the district. She said that officers from other districts in Region Four have also seized expired items from supermarkets.
