Dear Editor,
For years Mocha Backlands have been in existence but never got any proper infrastructure other than a few drainage works. For years now residents have been hearing from Government to Government that they have our interest at heart.
The area would also have regular meetings with Government officials yet the area doesn’t have the basic necessities like road, electricity and there is a section yet to receive water supply.
Infrastructure is badly needed in the area, I don’t know if the government thinks that because it is a farming area that the residents don’t need proper infrastructure. I would like for a day if the media can take a visit to highlight the daily struggles the residents face mainly when the rain falls.
The area does not have proper representatives, a situation that also leads to some of the daily challenges the residents faces. When the rain falls the area is worse than a pasture for animals. Persons in the area who own vehicles would be forced to either park their vehicles in their yard or leave them at the head of the access dam; this is not safe.
It is a struggle for the children who have to go to school when the rain falls. The situation sometimes forces them to stay away from school.
At nights the area is totally dark except for when there is moon light. I want to know if this is the good life the APNU-AFC coalition promised us? Persons in the area would even be robbed at nights while heading home. Many persons in the area can’t even watch television since some can’t afford to buy gasoline to operate a generator.
Many persons in the area would have to use kerosene oil lamp or a battery light at nights. It is far too long that the residents are living under those conditions.
A section of the community has water supply while ten to fifteen don’t, but still have to pay $200,000 for the lease and over the next fifty years another sum of $200,000. The residents who don’t have water supply would have to depend on the rain water for domestic purpose and the trench water for bathing and other purposes.
The community is really in need of infrastructure and proper regulation. Farmers are planting and even placing pig pens on the reserve which sometimes lead to the waste ending up in the trench water that persons have to use. I need someone to look into the needs of the residents and address it very soon. It is about time the residents be given basic necessity to improve their standard of living.
