A man who was admitted to the Suddie public hospital, after being bitten by a venomous snake on Wednesday last, was yesterday transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The victim has been identified as Etwaroo Dass, better known as Basant, a 64-year-old security guard of Riverstown, Essequibo Coast.
Reports are that Dass was bitten while attending to his cow in the Riverstown Backdam.
It was reported that the snake was beneath a stack of dry branches, when Dass stepped on it.
Kaieteur News was told that the snake dealt the man a bite just below his knee.
A daughter-in-law of the victim said that she later saw him coming home without his shirt. She recalled that she found this strange and this began to raise her suspicions since he had left for the Backdam with his shirt on.
The woman said that as Dass drew nearer, he removed his shirt from his foot, and said that he had been bitten by a Labaria.
The man was immediately rushed to the intensive care unit of the Suddie Public Hospital, after the bitten area became discoloured.
Family members said that the man received an injection, and was subsequently transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital.
After speaking with family members late yesterday afternoon, Kaieteur News was informed that the hospitals cannot fully treat the snake bite. Dass was then transferred to a private hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
Snake bites are generally rare in Region Two. Though the region is predominantly a farming community, most farmers are geared with heavy duty long boots, and are extra cautious as they go about their work, knowing very well of the dangers that may loom just below the surface.
