NA Prison guard accused of smuggling ganja granted bail

A Prison Officer who was nabbed with a quantity of marijuana and cigarettes which he was trying to smuggle into the New Amsterdam Prison, his place of employment, has been granted bail.
Jamal Carter, 26, of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 on trafficking in narcotics and introducing prohibited items to the New Amsterdam Prison charges.
The case for the prosecution is that on February 12, last, the prison officer was on the premises of the Prison when he allegedly left the prison yard and went into the lunch room.
He was seen acting suspiciously; he had a white food bowl, along with a coat in his arms. He was questioned and searched and 20 packets of Pall Mall cigarettes and a quantity of what appeared to be leaves seeds and stems of the marijuana plant was found in his possession.
The allegation is that he intended to take these things to his brother who is a prisoner.
The substance was tested and weighed and found to be 528 grams of marijuana. .
Carter is expected to return to court on April 27 when the matter is expected to continue.
