Less than one week after it was completely destroyed by fire, there is now an effort by the Coldingen furniture factory to fulfill its commitment to clients. Supra International has already begun preliminary works to have its operations back up and running by the new week.
Yesterday, during a visit to the location, foreman of the entity, Kevin Gunsam, said that personnel from the company were out sourcing machinery to have them installed in a temporary factory setting, under renovations.
A workshop area in the compound where the company had its operations and which was untouched by the fire, is being prepared to house the “temporary” factory.
There is another section in the compound that the senior operative of the company explained would also be used and if needs be, the company may also have to rent some space from the Denmore Garment Factory, located right at the Coldingen Industrial Site.
Gunsam told the Kaieteur News that because of the volume of work which the company has to make good and the commitment to other customers who would have already paid in addition to those who placed orders, the company will not be retrenching any of its employees.
He explained that the company needs all hands on deck at this time to ensure that deadlines are kept. He further stated that clients have since expressed understanding of the company’s present situation due to the fire and would have given them a three-week grace period to follow through on production and delivery of orders.
Among the works which were being carried out on Wednesday was the foundation for the new facility which would serve as the factory even as workers were carrying out other works all with the intention to make the facility ready.
New machineries are expected to be installed as early as today, Thursday and according to Gunsam, workers are also likely to be asked to work on Guyana’ Republic Anniversary, tomorrow Friday.
On Tuesday, Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle, told the Kaieteur News that a cause for the fire had still not been determined even as he posited that the fire investigators are still working to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
As it relates to the insurance, Kevin Gunsam said that the insurance company did visit the burnt out sight and took statements and photographs. The company is currently in discussion with the management on going forward.
Meanwhile, more than four days after the fire, smoke could still be seen emanating from the rubble. The company was not given clearance either by the fire service or the insurance company to remove the debris just yet.
On Saturday after closing up the factory, the supervisors received communication from a security guard on site that fire and smoke were seen emanating from a section of the two-storied facility located in the Coldingen Industrial Site.
The fire quickly raced through the building sending millions of dollars in raw materials and finished products up in flames. When the smoke cleared, the multi-million-dollar, decades old investment was reduced to ashes. Several persons’ livelihood was interrupted.
