The couple who was arrested in connection with the mysterious death of a neighbourhood policewoman has since been released on station bail from the Sister’s Police Station.
According to Commander of B’ Division, there is no substantial evidence to further keep the couple in custody. He added that the Director of Public Prosecution has requested some additional information from the police on the matter.
Zainatoon Nissa Higgins, 68, of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice, was hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Hospital after falling ill, she subsequently succumbed to her illness. Questions arose surrounding the death of the woman after she allegedly gave police a statement that the couple that was living in her house, in the upper flat as tenants had poisoned her to death. The couple was later arrested.
It was disclosed that the woman was hospitalised for several days prior to her death. Higgins had reportedly revealed to authorities that she had asked the woman living with her to make her a cup of tea. That tea, she said, made her feel ‘sick’.
In her statement, she alleges that there was a ‘green substance’ left at the bottom of the cup after drinking it. It was not long after that she reportedly began to vomit; she claimed she felt so sick that she paid a visit to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated and sent away.
Higgins reportedly paid a second visit two Monday’s ago to the hospital shortly after and was subsequently admitted.
While there, Higgins gave investigators a container with ‘green substance’ settled at the bottom. A translucent bottle containing a green fluid was also given to investigators.
A relative had also told this publication that Higgins had travelled with a male driver en route to Georgetown and she disclosed to him that she lived alone. He allegedly capitalized on what she said and told her that he and his wife were looking for a place to lodge. It was then that she told him that he could move in with his wife. They moved into the upper flat sometime in November 2017.
Additionally, a source revealed that Higgins had complained to them that in January she visited one of the local banks in Berbice and discovered that money was withdrawn from her account with her knowledge. She reportedly returned home and questioned the wife who allegedly confessed to stealing her bank card and made purchases through her account.
In 2010, the police at the Reliance Police Station moved quickly and stopped the burial of a woman who reportedly died from poisoning. The woman, Zabina Bannu Mohamed, 67, of Adelphi Settlement died on December 2 at the New Amsterdam Hospital after some six days in the medical institution, having been taken there by her sister Zainatoon Nissa Higgins called ‘Nazmoon’ on November 27. The woman had reportedly ingested a poisonous substance.
Efforts were being made to bury the woman on December 3, but were aborted after the police got word that the woman died from poisoning.
At the hospital, Zabina was admitted and treated for poisoning. She denied knowing how her sister got poison. But, on her return home, she found a bottle marked Torpedo and some tablets.
She related this to the doctor. She stated that despite the best efforts of the staff her sister succumbed on Thursday, six days after she was admitted to the hospital.
However, she was given a ‘paper’ which she was told to take to the police station.
She was prepared to bury her sister on Friday, one day after she died, according to Muslim rights. However, at the station, she was told that her sister died from poisoning and that she cannot bury until the police carried out a full investigation.
She was taken in for questioning and asked to give a statement, which she did. A post-mortem had revealed that organic Torpedo was in her system when she died.
