Two men are now hospitalised after the vessel they were in reportedly exploded last Monday, some six miles away from the Moruca River mouth, within the vicinity of Leo Beach [Region One].
The victims have been identified as 40-year-old Ramesh Maniram, a fisherman of Dredge Creek, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo Coast, and Ventle Jainarine.
Reports are that the men along with two others, made their way to sea on Monday morning last, when their vessel mysteriously exploded.
Kaieteur News understands that the fishing party had just deployed their nets near shore when the incident occurred. The men were reportedly cooking on board, when there was a sudden explosion. The boat cabin – made of wood – was completely destroyed by the explosion, tossing the entire crew overboard. Reports are that Maniram managed to get hold of his cell phone, and rang a friend who subsequently rescued them, and transported the men to the Charity wharf.
Kaieteur News spoke with a brother of Maniram, who managed to relate what had occurred. His brother noted, “After the explosion I went to the Charity wharf to collect him and then I took him to Suddie. When I picked him up, I asked him what happened, and he said that he was reversing the boat and then he just hear the explosion. He said he immediately pitched off the boat and when he catch himself he was already overboard.”
According to his brother, Maniram who has been a fisherman for more than 30 years, supports his wife and four children by means of his fishing business.
