A 21-year-old auto mechanic was yesterday sentenced to four years in jail after he opted to plead guilty to an armed robbery charge.
Shaquille Wilburg of Public Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, was charged for robbing a businessman of $3.3M in the vicinity of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) on Brickdam, on October 13 last.
Wilburg had pleaded not guilty to the charge on his first appearance in Court. However, after almost five months on remand with no legal representation, Wilburg decided to change his plea when he reappeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
The court heard that on the day in question, Wilburg and others, robbed Linden Wilson of $3M cash along with two cell phones valued $300,000. Wilson was walking in the direction of NIS on Brickdam, when he was confronted by Wilburg, who was armed with a gun.
The incident was captured on CCTV camera and Wilburg was arrested. He was positively identified by the victim during an ID parade.
rior to being sentenced, Wilburg told the court that he was sorry for his actions. As such, Magistrate Singh took into consideration his early plea and the time he spent on remand before imposing the four-year sentence.
