After taking a bettering from the weather since the last quarter of 2017, football teams are keeping their fingers crossed with the hope that competitive action which is scheduled to start this weekend, gets off unhindered from the elements.
Secretary of the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA), Gidel Austin has informed that they are aiming to play three competitions on the weekend, the continuation of their senior league which has three more matches slated; the continuation of the inaugural GFF/NAMILCO Thunderbolt Flour Power National Under-17 Intra Association League and the commencement of the GFF/Pele Alumini Frank Watson U-15 Intra Association League.
All the action is set to unfold at the Golden Grove ground on Saturday with the opening of the U-15 league which will take the form of a March Past from 13:00hrs followed by a single match between Golden Stars FC and BV Triumph United.
On Sunday, the U-17 league will resume with two matches the first of which would see Bachelor’s Adventure/Paradise Sports Club talking on Plaisance Panthers from 11:00hrs followed by a match between Ann’s Grove and Buxton United from 13:00hrs.
The senior players will take center stage from 15:00hrs when Mahaica Determinators tackle Golden Stars. Two more matches are left to conclude this league which was launched since October 2016.
The winning club will be rewarded with $200,000, while $100,000; $75,000 and $50,000 have been set aside for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed clubs. The Highest Goal Scorer receives the President’s prize of $25,000 and a pair of football boots, while the Best Goalkeeper collects a pair of gloves and a football.
The winning coach of the tournament would ride away with a brand new motor cycle. Contesting clubs are Plaisance Panthers, BV Triumph United, Buxton Stars, Bachelors Adventure Paradise Sports Club, Golden Stars, Ann’s Grove, Mahaica Determinators and Victoria Kings.
Among the entities that have contributed to the senior league are the Guyana Football Federation, National Sports Commission, Demerara Harbour Bridge, Sterling Products, Integrated Security, Jerricks Funeral Parlour, Keltech Document Center, Depart of Culture Youth and Sports and The Trophy Stall.
