A 15-year-old Sophia resident was yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court, for the murder of Haymant Persaud, the brother of Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud. The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the matter concluded yesterday, before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The Magistrate told the teen that the prosecution team was successfully able to establish a prima facie case against him and he will have to stand trial before a judge and jury at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
The juvenile was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on February 19, 2017 at Stabroek Market Square, he killed 51-year-old Haymant Persaud.
According to information, Persaud was with another man in the market area, when he was attacked and robbed by the teen.
According to reports, Persaud of Affiance, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed to death by the 15-year-old who relieved him of his gold chain before making good his escape in a bus.
The lad was then arrested a few days after at his home. He is reported to have confessed to killing the top cop’s brother.
Haymant Persaud’s body was left lying at the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary for close to two weeks before it was identified. Police had also sought help from the public to identify the dead man.
Based on reports, the teen, who was charged before with attempted murder and inflicting grievous bodily harm, was positively identified as the perpetrator during an identification parade.
