A 68-year-old woman of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice who was hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Hospital after falling ill, has succumbed.
However, her death seems far from normal. She fell ill in her home. She lived with a couple, who stayed in the upper flat of her house.
Zainatoon Nissa Higgins, a Neighbourhood Police Officer in East Canje, succumbed to her illness while the couple was placed under arrest. It was revealed that the woman gave a statement to authorities alleging that she was poisoned by the couple who lived with her but was not her relatives.
As the details of the strange death began to unravel, it was disclosed that the woman was hospitalised for several days prior.
Higgins three weeks ago reportedly revealed to authorities that she had asked the female living with her to make her a cup of tea. That tea, she said, made her feel sick.
In her statement, she alleges that there was a green substance left at the bottom of the cup after drinking it.
It was not long after that she reportedly began to vomit. She claimed she felt so sick that she paid a visit to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated and sent away.
The Neighbourhood Policewoman reportedly made a second visit two Monday’s ago to the hospital shortly after and was subsequently admitted.
It was also divulged while she was admitted at the health institution; Higgins gave investigators a container containing a ‘green substance’.
A bottle containing a green fluid was also given to investigators.
Meanwhile, a relative told this publication that Higgins had travelled with a male driver en route to Georgetown and she disclosed to him that she lived alone. He allegedly capitalised on what she said and told her that he and his wife were looking for a place to lodge. It was then that she told him that he could move in with his wife. They moved into the upper flat since November 2017.
Additionally, it was revealed that Higgins had complained to them that sometime in January she visited one of the local banks in Berbice and discovered that money was withdrawn from her account without her knowledge.
She reportedly returned home and questioned the wife who allegedly confessed to stealing her bank card and made purchases through her account.
Divisional Commander, Lyndon Alves, confirmed that the couple was arrested a few days ago and remains in custody. Advice will be sought on the way forward.
According to Alves, a post mortem was done on the dead woman yesterday but it was inconclusive. A second autopsy is said to take place today for a second opinion.
