When one would think that the carjacking saga is over, there is still much more work to be done.
Well known taxi driver, Dianarine, called “Mello”, was gun butted and robbed of the Premio motorcar HC 480 in the vicinity of Paradise, East Coast Demerara.
The bandits fled with the motorcar, $58,000 in cash, his cell phone and other valuables.
Mello, who hails from the East Canje area, has been operating as a taxi driver for close to 40 years. The man stated that it was the first time that something like that has happened to him.
Mello, who is known for making very early morning trips, stated that he was on his way to Georgetown. He left New Amsterdam about 04:00 hrs on Sunday with two passengers and picked up two more at No 5 Village, West Coast Berbice.
He said that in the vicinity of Paradise, the men asked to be let off. One paid with a $1,000 bill.
The other came out and went by the driver side and was pushing his hand in his pocket as if to take out money. Instead, he pulled out a hand gun and dealt the man a lash to his right side face whilst trying to collect the car keys. A scuffle ensued between him and the bandit.
According to Mello, at the same time a vehicle was coming and the bandit stood up next to the car as though nothing had happened. He used the opportunity to hit the man with his car door before throwing away the key and exiting the car and running away. The other passengers also exited the vehicle, and were shouting for help.
Mello stated that he ran from there straight to the Enmore Police Station on the Railway Embankment, all the time calling for help and trying to flag
down passing vehicles. No one stopped or assisted.
At the station, he was given quick assistance and taken to the Cove and John Police Station where he made a report.
He said that the police led by Detective Sergeant Fordyce responded promptly and a number of vehicles were dispatched.
Between 07:30 and 08:00 hrs, they received an anonymous call that a vehicle was left abandoned at Section ‘C’ Enterprise.
They immediately headed to the location where the vehicle was found. The inside was ransacked and his music system and other valuables were missing.
He had to seek medical attention and is very thankful that he is alive and his vehicle has been found.
