(https://www.guyanaguardian.com/ www.guyanesegirlsrock.com) While there are a handful of television personalities with direct Guyanese roots, none of them have ever repeatedly acknowledged their Guyana upbringing as much as Black Panther’s actress Letitia Wright.
The 24-year-old Guyana –born actress, who played the role of T’Challa’s whiz-kid younger sister, Shuri, in the movie has since become a big screen favorite for movie goers worldwide.
Though she had a small role in Doctor Who and in Leam Neeson’s blockbuster movie “The Commuter”, her superb acting in the Black Panther movie had fans clamouring to learn more about her.
Her popularity has skyrocketed so much since the release of the movie; – her photo has now found its way on the front page of more than a hundred magazines and newspapers in various languages worldwide, in less than 48 hours.
But ironically, while the world wrote about this amazing Guyanese actress her name never made it into the mainstream news media in her own country, Guyana, until now.
Despite this, Ms. Wright continues to acknowledge that she is a Guyanese by birth, and in almost every one of her interviews, she always gave credit to her country Guyana, while indicating that she would like to help improve the country where she came from.
Staring alongside some big names which included Michael B. Jordan and Forest Whitaker, Ms. Wright says that she once suffered from depression and was about to give up on her aspirations in life.
But by giving her dreams just one more try, she was able to actually transform into a successful person.
Speaking about Guyana, she said that she had missed her Guyanese culture a lot when she first came to England 16 years ago.
“As Guyanese, we are accustomed to say good morning and good afternoon to everyone. Be close to our neighbours, helping each other out, and trying to be united despite our situation, and be more like one community. But when I came to England, everyone avoided you, locked themselves away indoors, and nobody said hello to each other”, she stressed.
Even as Guyanese across the globe are beaming with pride as actress Letitia Wright gets ready to light up the big screen in her starring role as Shuri. There‘s another Guyanese girl, with a not so prominent role in the movie, but who also deserves to be celebrated.
Meet actress Linden born, New York based Shaunette Renée Wilson who plays a member of Dora Milaje, a Wakanda’s elite Special Forces unit, in the much anticipated Black Panther movie. Dora Milajes are female warriors who not only functioned as Wakandan Black Ops and the Black Panther’s personal bodyguard, but also served as wives-in-training for the king.
