A 20-year-old disc-jockey is now dead following an accident along the No. 6 Public Road, West Coast Berbice, while two others have been admitted at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
Dead is Rafeek Mohammed of Cotton Tree Village. The injured have been identified as 16-year-old Tamesh Chamalla of Lot 15 Cotton Tree Village and Somath Jagdeo, also of Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice.
Police sources have revealed that the accident occurred at approximately 01:45 hrs yesterday. Jagdeo, the driver of the Toyota Hilux 4×4 bearing licence plate number GSS 6905 was reportedly proceeding East at a fast rate and was about to negotiate a turn when he lost control of the vehicle.
The pick-up was reported to have flipped several times before ending up in a trench.
Mohammed who was sitting in the front passenger seat endured the brunt of the impact.
In a telephone interview, his step-father, Richard Charles, said that Jagdeo and Chamalla picked him and Mohammed up at approximately 18:30 hrs on Saturday. They dropped Mr. Charles off at an event in No.5 Village and told him they were going to Bushlot Village at Jagdeo’s relatives where there was a family gathering.
At 02:00 hrs yesterday, he received a telephone call informing him that the friends were in an accident at No. 6 Village.
He stated that he rushed to the scene and saw Chamalla and Jagdeo’ lying unconscious on the road, while his step-son was pinned in the front passenger seat.
According to him, Mohammed died shortly after he was freed from the vehicle.
Many friends and family members expressed shock and dismay on social media at the passing of the popular disc jockey.
Meanwhile, a Bushlot, Corentyne labourer was struck down on Saturday by a black fielder wagon while returning home on his bicycle.
Deodat ‘Bully’ Bissember , 40, of Lot 59 Bushlot Farm, Corentyne was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital in an unconscious state after he was struck on the Kildonan Village Public Road by a hire car.
Bissember’s relatives disclosed that he regained consciousness at the Port Mourant Hospital Saturday night and was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted.
He was reportedly heading home on his bicycle when the accident occurred. At the time he was said to be intoxicated while the driver of the car has since been arrested and assisting the police.
This is the sixth road accident within Region 5 and 6. No one has been arrested as yet in connection with the accident at Number 72 Village that claimed the life of a Number 69 Village GuySuCo former employee.
A pensioner also died recently on the Williamsburgh Public Road after being struck by a speeding car.
