Murder accused, Davenend Dhandhari, called “Kevin”, 20, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice, has been committed to stand trial in the next sitting of the Berbice High Court on a charge of murder.
Dhandhari is accused of murdering Omesh Seelall, called “Rovin” or “Short Neck”. The incident is alleged to have occurred on Sunday September 17, 2016 at Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice.
The accused a farmer and a former student at the time of the act was committed following a preliminary inquiry conducted by Magistrate Mauricia Mittelholzer at the Reliance and Albion Magistrate’s Courts.
Seelall, 21, a labourer of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice, was bashed in his head and died some six days after the act.
The men were reportedly in a crowd of persons at a wedding house nearby. They were reportedly standing on the road when Dhandhari ran across the road and grabbed a piece of wood from the dray cart nearby and struck Seelall to his head flooring him instantly and rendering him unconscious.
Seelall was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital when he received emergency treatment, before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition. He was hooked up on a respirator since he was rushed to the hospital and never regained consciousness.
The police had retrieved the piece of wood reportedly used in the attack.
The case was prosecuted by Special Prosecutor, Attorney-at-law George Thomas who was retained by the family. The accused is being represented by attorney at law Murseline Bacchus.
