Dear Editor,
As I read the missive penned by Councillor Sherod Duncan in the February 14 Edition of the Kaieteur News, I was deeply saddened.
With the advent of long-awaited Local Government Elections, many citizens had great expectations that change would permeate the local government spectrum. Further, that the new breed of Councillor would formulate policies and programmes that would by and large transform local communities and elevate the status of the City.
The very content of the letter suggests that there is a deliberate attack on the Offices of the Mayor and Town Clerk. The elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor are around the corner. Hence, this is a definite political gimmick that seeks to tarnish the reputation of the Mayor and Town Clerk. This highlights the deep political distrust that exists between APNU and the AFC.
My question is: why can’t Sherod Duncan sit with his political superiors and address issues in a civilized manner?
I am curious, could somebody from the AFC or APNU tell the citizens what the requirements are to select Councillors for Local Authority bodies? Because evidence before us suggests that the current formula has failed the people of the City. A senior Councillor, who served in the capacity of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, has the temerity to use the newspapers to quarrel for amenities that his colleague did not earn or deserve. I recall the days when Councillors gave their stipend to charity. It is clear that in those days, Councillors understood the meaning of volunteerism and served the city and its citizenry with dignity, diligence and decorum. To publicly attack the Mayor of Georgetown points to the lack of respect and political decorum. Moreover, it is an attribute of political waywardness and wickedness, which would not do well for the political future of Mr. Duncan.
Mr Duncan’s missive is a travesty to local government democracy and local government reform.
As a citizen I expect to read about the progress of the constituency which Mr. Duncan represents, not about who should benefit from certain amenities.
