Regional Super50 Festival Barnwell, Hemraj lead Jaguars to fourth win as USA go down by seven wickets

A fine all-round performance from 31-year-old Chris Barnwell and an aggressive 64 from 24-year-old Chanderpaul Hemraj powered Guyana Jaguars to an emphatic seven-wicket win against the USA at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium yesterday to register their fourth win in six matches.
Barnwell, back in the team to replace Reifer, bowled brilliantly to take 4-35 from eight overs, while Kemo Paul and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul captured two wickets each as the USA were bowled in 43.1 overs despite a carefully constructed 80 from 118 balls from Jaskaran Malhotra.
But only former West Indies batsman, Jamaican Xavier Marshall (19) and Adil Bhatti (17) of the other batsmen reached double figures on a slow track and spongy outfield.
Jaguars led by a 109-run second wicket stand between Hemraj and the experienced Shiv Chanderpaul (39) and unbeaten knocks of 19 each from Skipper Leon Johnson and Barnwell, reached 150-3 to take a bonus point.
West Indies batsman Shimron (5) was caught behind off left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar before Hemraj and Chanderpaul joined forces, with Hemraj going after the bowling and Chanderpaul playing the supporting role.
Chanderpaul, looking to accelerate after a cautious start, was next to go when he hit medium pacer Roy Silva to long-on at 94-2.
Just after reaching his maiden fifty in this format Hemraj, who faced just 59 balls in his explosive 64, was taken at slip off of Tamil Patel at 114-3.
Barnwell joined Leon Johnson and Barnwell belted the ball to parts of the ground before finishing the game with his second six.
Earlier, after a 30-minute late start due to seepage under the covers from early morning rain, Jaguars won the toss and invited the USA to bat in glorious sunshine but after one over; bowled Kemo Paul and with the USA on 1-0 the Umpires stopped play.
And after lengthy discussions on the pitch between the Umpires and the Match Referee, the roller was summoned to roll a soft area on the pitch after the Jaguars team and the American openers had left the field.
As soon as the repairs to pitch had been completed, a slight shower retuned and the Pitch was again covered.
Play resumed at 11:00hrs and the overs were reduced to 44 and Sunny Sohal (1) was bowled by the 19-year-old Sherfane Rutherford in the second over with the score on one.
The 31-year-old Marshall and Malhotra added 39 for the second before Marshall, whose 44-ball 19 included a dismissive straight six off of Rutherford, was bowled by Barnwell who got both ways movement off the seam.
The next three batsmen: Mrunal Patel, Skipper Ibrahim Khaleel and Roy Silva were all sent packing before they had scored and the USA were in a deep hole from which they never got out of as the Guyanese bowlers kept the shackles on the batsmen in a very strong breeze.
Malhotra, who got going by pulling Paul for four, added 32 with Adil Bhatti (17), the only other batsman to reach double figures, before Bhatti was run out at 107 after Malhotra had reached his 50 from 86 balls.
Malhotra and the big hitting Jamaica Elmore Hutchinson (9) took the score to 133 as Malhotra stepped on the gas towards the end of his innings before being taken at long-on by Barnwell, going after Devendra Bishoo at 141-9.
Paul finished off the innings by removing Netravalkar (3) brilliantly caught by a diving Hetmyer running in from long-on to end the innings.
The Jaguars moved to 18 points with two matches to go and will play the Leewards Hurricanes in a day/night game tomorrow after the Hurricanes lost to Scorpions last night at Coolidge.
