The appointment of a new Board of Directors for the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation [GPHC] has been recently approved by Cabinet. The Board will see a continuance of Ms. Kesaundra Alves as its chairperson and a number of other members who made up the former Board.
At the most recent hosting of post cabinet press briefing, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, said that Cabinet has approved the appointment of the members of the Board of Directors of the GPHC for a period of one year with effect from February 1, 2018.
He observed that the board members have pretty much remained unchanged. Those appointed, he said, are Alves as chairperson and members: Dr. Holly Alexander, Colette Adams, Sonya Roopnauth, Cleopatra Barkoye and Kemton Alexander.
In addition to a Bachelor of Laws Degree and Legal Education Certificate, Alves is also the holder of a Master of Laws Degree from the Dalhousie University of Law located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She also specialised in health law, ethics, policy and inter-disciplinary programme involving medicine, human rights, law and politics related to public health.
Dr. Alexander has worked for several years in the public health sector and holds diplomas in education, public management, leprology (the study of leprosy and its treatment) and a Masters in Public Health. She has also been spearheading several aspects of public health over the years.
Adams is the acting Permanent Secretary at the Public Health Ministry and Roopnauth holds the portfolio of Director of Budget and had also previously worked in the Ministry of Health too.
The Nursing Council will be represented by Barkoye who holds a Masters in Nursing Education, among several other certificates.
Kemton Alexander, the representative of the Guyana Public Service Union, comes with a background of a registered nurses and midwife. He also has a background of a registered nurse and midwife.
The Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier George Lewis, is an ex officio member of the board.
At their appointment to the Board last year, Minister of Public Health, Ms Volda Lawrence, said of its members, “From the outline of their experiences and their qualifications, I believe these persons are well put together to address the several issues which confront the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, from policy to standards to vacancies, and in order to assist us in being able to achieve that vision of having the Georgetown Public Hospital operate in the manner in which it was set out, and that is our tertiary health institution, specifically as a referral hospital.”
She had pointed out too, “The Board will be expected to carry out its full mandate as prescribed within the law.”
Based on reports reaching this publication, a number of measures have been taken since the instalment of the board last year that are aimed at improving the operation of the premier health facility.
