The man who was incarcerated since 2011 on a charge of murder has been jailed for 12 years after pleading guilty to the lesser county of manslaughter.
Narvin Sugrim Andrews, called “Navin Sugrim”, or “Pumpkin” of Rahaman Street, Number 78 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon in the Berbice High Court on a charge of murder.
He was accused of murdering his neighbour, Hilton Ward, a pensioner of Lot 194 Rahaman Street, Number 78 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The incident occurred on March 27, 2011 at the elderly man’s residence.
Sugrim Andrews was one of two persons who had earlier indicated his willingness to plead to the lesser count of manslaughter. Before the matter began the man maintained his earlier willingness to plead guilty to the lesser count. This was accepted by the Prosecution.
Prosecuting the case was Attorney at Law Tuanna Hardy.
On the day in question, the deceased was in his yard, at Lot 194 Rahaman Street, Number 78 Village, Corentyne. Subsequently the accused and the deceased became embroiled in an argument over money in the victim’s yard.
The argument got heated and Sugrim Andrews subsequently stabbed Ward. The man collapsed and was picked up and rushed to the hospital where he remained warded for 12 days following which he succumbed.
The autopsy revealed that the man died due to acute peritonitis. (Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, the lining of the inner wall of the abdomen and cover of the abdominal organs).
Andrews was subsequently sentenced to 12 years in jail. Justice Kissoon taking into account that he had pleaded guilty and had not wasted the courts time.
Attorney at law Sasha Roberts of the Legal Aid Clinic had pleaded Ward’s case.
