The St. Andrew’s Kirk Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest buildings in Georgetown, turns 200 in September. To celebrate this milestone, the church has decided to roll out an impressive list of activities, which will last throughout the year.
“This year we are 200 years and therefore we feel it necessary to dedicate all of 2018 to celebrate this milestone,” said Wadeka Duke, Public Relations Officer at the St. Andrew’s Kirk Presbyterian Church. These activities, she added, are set to underscore the main principle of the Presbyterian faith which is to reach persons in the community.
Rev. Maureen Massiah detailed the Church’s involvement in the community from the inception to present. One of the things she mentioned is the church’s involvement during the era of slavery and how it is currently working to assist members of the community.
She said: “The church has strengthened its reach within communities through several initiatives: Kitchen Project, Visits to Shut-ins and the elderly, Rev. Best Scholarship Programme, and Rutherford Fund.” The Rev, Best scholarship is named after the later Pastor Rev Oswald Best.
Also speaking at the launch was Ms. Cathy Hughes, Minister of Public Telecommunication who is also a member of the church. The Minister, in her remarks, underscored the importance of corporate Guyana in maintaining the integrity of the church through donations which she said will be used for building, renovating and other important activities.
Minister Hughes also spoke briefly about her experience at the church. She told those in attendance that she was christened at the St Andrew’s Kirk; she also got married there.
The activities for the bi-centennial will run from March 31 to November 23, 2018. Some of these activities are the Tea Party, which will be held on March 31; Ptolemy Reid Outreach, April 10; Friends of the Mission Coffee Morning, May 1; Sports day, July 28; Health Fair, August 18; Youth Fest, August 25; Rededication of St Andrew’s Kirk, August 26; Prayer Breakfast, September 1; Anniversary Reception, September 27; Anniversary Church service, October 27 Church concert; and November 24, Church fair.
