Dear Editor,
After the new bridge across the Demerara River is completed, I think there are plans to scrap the existing one because of the cost of maintenance. I believe that this should not be done, because there will still be the problem of traffic congestion on the new three-lane proposed bridge, even though there are plans for diverting the traffic at various points at Peter’s Hall.
We have to have a broader vision. In many countries, a river that passes through a main city has many bridges at various crossing points – some being even one way.
I believe it would make sense to keep the Demerara Harbour Bridge, because it can help divert some traffic that would cross the upper East Bank and West Bank roads. For persons travelling down, going East and their destination is from La Grange to Wales, they shouldn’t have to drive all the way to Peter’s Hall.
When the new bridge is finished, maybe we can even close the existing one to heavy vehicular traffic and just allow light vehicles.
I would suggest that we eventually upgrade the bridge to one like what Berbice presently has. We need to apply this broader vision and not scrap the bridge.
A country that is in these stages of development needs to add infrastructure, not lessen what we have. And besides, money shouldn’t be an issue. Guyana is on the brink of financial prosperity and as a young person, I am very excited and optimistic about the future of the country.
To all the persons in government reading this, please don’t scrap the Demerara Harbour Bridge. If we do that, it will be one of our greatest regrets. Let’s build, not tear down. I can hardly wait to welcome the one that will be built across the Essequibo River at the Kurupukari crossing where I teach.
Yours faithfully,
Quado Vancooten,
Headteacher, Kurupukari Primary School, Region 8.

Good luck, I begged them, on these blogs, to make the bridge a four lane one, high enough for ships to pass without opening. I feel we have already outgrown the new design. We will eventually need a suspension bridge with three to four lanes each way.
