The mother of the two children who were left alone at home on Monday, when a fire broke out, has been placed on $50,000 bail, when she appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Twenty-four year-old Kamila Henry, a part-time hairdresser, of 750 Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, stood before Magistrate Alex Moore just after midday to answer to the charge of child neglect.
The charge read that on Monday 5th February 2018 at Glasgow Housing Scheme, being the mother and caretaker of her two children, willfully contributed to her children being in need of protective intervention. Henry pleaded not guilty to the charge. Her Attorney, Joel Edmond, was not present during the court proceedings.
The Prosecution, led by Corporal Lennox Poliah, objected to bail on the grounds that it is not the first time that Henry had left her children unattended. He stated that on a previous occasion, the grandmother of the two children had reported to the police that they were left alone at home with Henry’s whereabouts unknown.
The prosecutor also mentioned that because of the damage to the house on Monday, Henry will not have a permanent place to reside. It was also highlighted that there is a possibility of Henry fleeing the jurisdiction while referencing, that even though she was in the jurisdiction when the fire occurred, she fled the scene.
Henry in her defence said, ‘I panicked’.
Bail was subsequently granted. She was ordered to report to the Sisters Police Station every Wednesday between the hours of 08:00 and 12:00. Her next court appearance will be on 26th March 2018.
The two children, 7 and 4 were alone at home when the fire began while their mother was nowhere to be found. A source close to the investigation disclosed that Henry stated that she was out trying to complete her daughter’s school project when she left them at home, unattended. However, residents in the area claimed that Henry is in the habit of leaving her children at home alone for hours.
On Monday night, the property caught fire from inside the upper flat while the children were home alone. In a bid to escape, the sister wrapped her brother in a sheet and let him out through a window as she followed behind. The seven-year-old girl suffered a broken leg as she saved her younger sibling and herself from the blaze.
