Berbice and Demerara have secured their places in the final of the Guyana Cricket Board/Dave West Indian Imports Inter County U15 50-over tournament after recording victories in their final preliminary round matches yesterday.
Off-spinner Jonathan Rampersaud picked up his second straight man-of-the-match award to lead the Berbicans to a 62-run win over Essequibo in overcast conditions at the Everest Cricket Club; their third win in as many matches.
Berbice skipper Zynul Ramsammy anchored the innings with a patient 36 off 59 balls as they managed 111-7 off their reduced quota of 36 overs which was caused by rain interruptions.
Mahendra Gopilall (09) was caught at the wicket by Jonathan Lynch while fellow opener Timonmi Caesar (08) was taken off Rickey Persaud as Berbice were reduced to 26-2 after they were inserted.
Vettorie Latchman and Ramsammy took the score to 43 before Latchman was caught of Gladewin Henry Jnr. for six before Ramsammy added 31 with Rampersaud. While the Essequibians managed to restrict any big scoring shots, both Ramsammy and Rampersaud picked up their runs with nudges and pushes into the gaps on both sides of the pitch.
However left arm spinner Rayan Atkinson ended their resistance when he bowled Rampersaud for 16 with a ball that turned back from outside off stump. Ramsammy faced 59 balls for a top score of 36 before he was stumped off Devindra Ramdahin charging down the pitch.
Atkinson who extracted considerable turn then accounted for Antwone Alexander (06) and Dirul Joseph (04); Latchman Dhanna and Jeremy Sandia remained not out on 09 and 05 respectively. Atkinson was the pick of the bowlers with 3-25 while Allicock, Henry, Lynch and Ramdahin had one each. Set a revised target of 118 using the Duckworth Lewis method, Rampersaud made early inroads into Essequibo’s batting when the trapped Reynard Ramroop (01) lbw with the score on four.
Jarrad Allicock (08) was caught off Dhanna before skipper Ronaldo Scouten was dismissed for one to leave the score at 21-3. Mahendra Basdeo who faced 53 balls was the only batsmen to reach double figures with 14 (2×4) as Essequibo were bowled out for 49 in 29.5 overs. Extras assisted with 21; Rampersaud claimed 4-13, Dhanna 2-8 and Budram Lakeram 2-9.
At Lusignan: Demerara overcame the GCB President’s XI by four wickets using the Duckworth Lewis method. GCB President’s XI batted first after winning the toss and were bowled out for 88 in 35 overs in another rain affected game.
Tameshwar Mahadeo scored 17 and Yohance Anjoy 13. Rommel Datterdeen and Zachary Jodha picked up two wickets each. Demerara responded with 80-6 in 30 overs. Nicholas Rajpat made 15 and Mavindra Dindyal 13. Ajay Gainda took 2-10 and Mitra Dhanraj 2-11.
Berbice and Demerara will clash in the final from 09:00 hours at Bourda tomorrow. (Zaheer Mohamed)
