The man Mario Cobis, 38, of Lot 5 Blairmont, No. 3 Settlement, West Bank Berbice, appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon and a mixed Jury in the Berbice High Court on a charge of rape.
The incident was committed during the wee hours of Monday November 14, 2016 at the woman’s house. Cobis a former cane cutter and deportee brutally raped the elderly woman whilst armed with a knife.
Prosecuting the state’s case was Attorney-at-law, Tuanna Hardy. It was reported that during the night, the accused armed himself with a long knife, made his way over to the woman’s premises where he removed a few louvre panes before squeezing himself in the house.
Whilst in the house, he proceeded to put the knife to the woman’s neck. He then collected a knife and went over to the woman’s home. He removed some louvres; entered the house, and placed the knife to her neck.
The Prosecution called seven witnesses, including four police ranks and three civilians, including the virtual complainant.
Justice Kissoon had earlier summed up the evidence for the jury who retired to consider the evidence. They subsequently returned with a unanimous verdict of guilty of rape.
Justice Kissoon then sentenced the man to life in prison.
