A resident of Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast, is claiming that ranks at the Anna Regina police station cannot account for his 47 rounds of ammunition that were lodged at the police station in June 2016.
Byizul Khan Ibrahim said that he left Guyana for his annual trip to the United States and, as is required, lodged his firearm and 47 rounds of ammunition at the Anna Regina police station. Ibrahim said that upon his return to the country, he went to uplift his firearm and ammunition and was told that they were sent to the Armoury in Eve Leary, Georgetown.
“I went to Georgetown to collect my firearm and ammunition and when they check they told me only the firearm was there and no ammunition,” Ibrahim recounted.
Ibrahim said he went back to Anna Regina, without uplifting the firearm, to inquire whether or not the ammunition was sent to the Armoury.
“When I went up [to Anna Regina], the police rank and sergeant checked the book and said the 47 rounds of ammunition and the firearm left to come to town,” he explained.
Ibrahim said he was then given a letter by the officer in charge of the Anna Regina police station at that time, which stated that a .32 Taurus Revolver and 47 rounds were sent to the Armoury, and asked that it be released to him. After he returned to Georgetown with the letter, further checks were made, and it was again confirmed that the ammunition was not at the Georgetown Armoury.
Ibrahim said he became frustrated, and decided to visit the office of the Minister of Public Security, Mr Khemraj Ramjattan, to make a complaint, but did not get to meet with the minister. Instead, he spoke to one “Mr. Ricky” who called the acting Police Commissioner at the time, Mr David Ramnarine, who asked that Ibrahim meet with him at his office.
Ibrahim said the issue was forwarded to another senior officer and after being told about the incident, that officer called the Georgetown Armoury and asked that the records be brought to his office. Checks were made and it was revealed that no ammunition was lodged at the Georgetown Armoury.
“He told me they will investigate the matter, and he told me to get a paper and buy a box of rounds and they will call me when they investigate the matter,” Ibrahim told Kaieteur News.
Ibrahim said that last year he visited the office of the Police Commissioner and was told that the matter was still being investigated. He said no calls were made to the officer who took the firearm and ammunition.
“I went to the new sergeant in Anna Regina and he check again and said he will call me, but they are not calling the police that bring down the gun, that is the person they supposed to call,” he added.
Ibrahim claims that to date nothing has been done and he is afraid that the box of ammunition may end up in the hands of criminals, since the box is marked with his initials, B.K.I, and this may land him in trouble if criminals decide to use same.
“When I lodged my ammunition at the Anna Regina police station I marked the box B.K.I, and I am afraid that some criminal might do something and a box with my initials will be on the scene of some crime,” he told Kaieteur News.
Ibrahim is asking that the matter be investigated and his ammunition be returned to him.
